Sunday found us blueberry picking at Russell's Blueberries and Book Barn. What do you with a barn used for selling blueberries for about six weeks a year? Well, you have a used and new book shop that also sells jams and honey. I picked up a two volume cookbook, Meta Given's Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking, published in 1947. It is fascinating reading and has some interesting recipes to try. Lard still figured prominently in many of the baked dishes.
This blueberry farm had three different varieties of berries. I chose Colville as they are smaller, more tart and I think less likely to fall apard in baking and staining the batter. I froze 6 pints.
Later in the afternoon Russell, his friend Katie, Mom and I played Euchre. I have little talent but some dumb luck. A good time was had by all, though.
