Golf yesterday was an adventure. Russell brought along his best friend,
Brad. Really nice young man whose goal is to be a full time farmer. I learned that to be able to make a go of it and not have to have other jobs you have to farm at least 1000 acres. His father bought the farmland from Mom and so Brad is around regularly. He and Russell work really hard in very hot humid conditions. Anyway, we golfed a new course and I rented clubs. I got out on the course only to find that the kid behind the counter had given me five left handed clubs and six right handed clubs...got my money back...hard to have no clubs you can use to chip/pitch and no low irons. It added ten strokes to my game.
So, I am on a hunt for some golf clubs and a bag. So many choices and so little knowledge about what to get. I have been grilling those who might be in the know but they also have a product to sell. The only brand that was around 40 years ago when I started to golf is Callaway. Evidently Wilson still makes a set of men's clubs but that is all. The other challenge is that I am left handed and female so no one has clubs to try. The new drivers have HUGE heads and one brand makes theirs white...seems a bit distracting. Then, there are these irons that actually look more like "woods" and I don't have a clue whether I could hit a ball with those. There are all these different putter heads. Way too many choices. There are supposed to be some good sales over the Labor Day weekend. I regret that I sold my clubs...relics from another time and place...at a garage sale just a few months ago.
And golf bags have become much more sophisticated...I have my eye on a lime green one, nice and subtle but easy to spot in a crowd. And then there are the carts you use to pull the clubs...they look like baby buggies and are just as expensive! All the backseat of my car needs is one more item to carry:)
Today I was in Midland for the Saturday farmer's market. I got radishes as Mom has been craving radish and butter sandwiches. On the way back I stopped at the Midland Golf and Country Club. It is just beautiful. I would love to play the course but it is private, so unless I meet someone who has a membership, I am not destined to do so.
Here is a picture of the farm where Mom was raised.
